Since 1974, when Jim was honorably discharged from the United States Navy, he knew he wanted to make golf his profession.  While attending California State University, Chico (where he graduated with a BA degree in Parks and Recreation Administration), he began his career in golf by working on the maintenance crew at a local country club.  Intent on learning every aspect of the business, he devoted the next seven years to the fields of golf course design, construction, maintenance, and operations.

In 1985, Jim accepted a position with American Golf Corporation, the largest company in the world at that time operating golf courses.  He excelled as a general manager and national golf course auditor, and within three years was promoted to a regional director, responsible for assisting with the growth of the Mid-America (Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Louisiana) region.  As a regional director, Jim was called upon to manage the efforts of 350 co-workers, maintain outstanding working relationships with landlords of properties, oversee the construction, development, and transition of golf courses, prepare annual business plans and meet the growing demands of an aggressive acquisition plan.

Following nearly thirteen years of outstanding service and commitment to AGC, Jim chose to share his knowledge and experience with others within the golf industry by forming Jim Helms Golf in 1997.  Since that time Jim has been involved with transitioning new and existing operations, providing oversight golf course management, providing operations training to golf course operators both national and international, conducting golf course operations evaluations, and developing due diligence reports for determining the health of a golf course business.  In early 2008, after successfully developing and leading a management team through the fifteen-month transition of Dorado Beach Resort and Club in Dorado, Puerto Rico for KemperSports Management, Jim returned to the states to continue his work in order to meet the continued demand for golf course operations advisory services.
